Real-time balancing the supply and demand of electricity on the grid is our core business. Transmission System Operators purchase ancillary services such as frequency containment and frequency restoration reserves from Sympower as a more sustainable and cost-effective way to maintain the balance between supply and demand of electricity. Sympower works with TenneT, Fingrid, SvK and the Israeli System Operator.


Sympower offers the option to participate on different electricity trading platforms. In doing so, participants can reduce the cost of purchasing electricity for their business. With City-Zen, Sympower looked at optimising the electricity bill of households by leveraging the flexibility of batteries combined with PV panels e-boilers and heat pumps to optimise the purchase of electricity on the day-ahead market.

Congestion Management

Sympower works with Distribution System Operators (DSOs) to investigate and mitigate local congestion issues. Sympower has been at the forefront of technological innovation in this area having worked with DSOs on this topic in projects such as InterFlex (Enexis), EnergieKoplopers2 (Alliander) and the Flex Versnellingsprogramma (Stedin).

Added Value From Existing Systems

Sympower’s software platform balances the electricity grid by unlocking the flexibility of distributed assets. The aggregation platform enables both real time monitoring and response to fluctuations on the grid by regulating electricity loads. We provide you demand response revenue with your current systems and appliances.

Valuable Assets

Heat pumps or resistance heaters can easily be connected to the Sympower platform. Ovens, boilers, space heaters, drying facilities, smelting processes, combined heat and power plants, district heating networks and so on can all temporarily be turned up or down without affecting operations. When there is a shortage of electricity on the grid, the heating temporarily gets turned down or off, while staying within the predetermined acceptable limits. When there is too much electricity on the grid, or the electricity price is low, more heat can be produced. Later this pre-heating will be corrected by turning the heating down. 
Cooling systems such as air conditioning or cold storage can account for a large percentage of an electricity bill. With Sympower, you can reduce your electricity expenses, without affecting your business operations. Certain types of ventilation systems are exceptionally suited to participation in sustainable balancing of the energy grid. Industrial drying processes generally account for a significant proportion of a facility’s energy bill. It is also a very flexible process, providing a good opportunity for reducing the energy bill and carbon footprint at the same time, with no upfront investment.

The transition from the internal combustion engine to electric vehicles presents significant challenges for the electricity grid, but also opportunities. How it Works

Your flexible assets will be connected to the Sympower platform, either directly via a software connection, or via the Sympower hardware. If installation is required, this is always done together with electricians (whether in-house or external) who are familiar with your systems. The hardware ensures that we can control your flexible processes, within the mutually agreed upon limits and restrictions, and measure the power consumption of those processes in real time. During moments when the grid is out of balance, Sympower will adjust the power consumption or production of your processes temporarily to help restore balance on the grid. The grid operator pays for the provision of this service.

How to Join the Platform

1. Intake

The first step is getting to know you and your business, and determining how your systems  can participate in grid balancing services. We will explain the system, the benefits and what it will mean for your business.

2. Offer

We'll create a custom offer detailing the estimated revenues for your business, based on the size and nature of your appliances and devices, and on the needs of your business. There are no up front costs for the installation of our system.

3. Installation

After reviewing the contract and discussing the limits or restrictions you wish to set on our system, we will proceed with planning and executing the installation. A certified electrician will install and test the system and you'll be good to go.

4. Go-Live

You are now set to participate in paid grid balancing services and contribute to a cleaner and more sustainable energy system. The system will be running in the background, without affecting your day to day business activities.
